Moxibustion

Whats is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is thought to be older than  acupuncture.  In cold and damp countries and in the winter season traditional acupuncture uses moxa to heat up acupuncture points and channels to encourage a balanced flow of energy.

What is direct moxibustion?

Direct moxibustion is the process where a herb commonly refered to a moxa is lit and left to smolder on the skin until the patient feels a warming sensation. It is then removed.

What is indirect moxibustion?

Indirect moxibustion involves having a smoldering moxa stick that resembles a cigar waved back and forth over certain parts of the body.

Research also shows moxibustion is 70% successful for turning breach babies.

What can moxibustion treatment be use for?

In traditional acupuncture moxibustion is used in conjunction with acupuncture for a wide variety of conditions. Some of the conditions that are especially suited to the use of moxa are fertility, stress and back pain.

  • Figure 1 Shows a smoldering cone of moxa. This  type of moxibustion is known as direct moxibustion.

  • Figure 2 shows a moxa stick being used to warm up an acupuncture point on the toe. This point is often used to turn breach babies. This is indirect moxibustion.

  • Figure 3 is another example of indirect moxibustion but this time it's being used to warm an acupuncture channel. It can also be used to warm and nourish certain areas of the body.
